Electric machines working as generators or motors are a key technology to power generation and applications such as appliances, robotics and electrified vehicles. A deep understanding of the basics of electric machines and knowledge of the different types of machines' operational characteristics allow system engineers and component specialists to develop electric drives delivering expected performance, whether the machines are connected to network or fed by a power electronic converter providing variable-speed capability .
Principal module aims
This module aims to show how modern electric machines and control theory underpin modern electric drives using power electronic converters. Characteristics of DC motors, Induction motors and PM brushless DC and AC motors will be analysed in context of different control approaches for variable speed applications. These will include appliances, robotics and electric vehicles.
