Put at it most general, the question the is module is concerned with is: how should we explain the way in which our being social creatures, who communicate with one another structures our minds? In particular, the question we be focusing on is the following. What if any is the role of communication in explaining the relation between (a) our capacity for self-consciousness and self-knowledge; (b) our understanding and knowledge of others; and (c) our objective thought about the physical world?
The basic background reading will Richard Moran's forthcoming The Exchange of Words (Harvard, 2018), conceived of by him as a companion volume to his book on self knowledge, Estrangement and Authority: an Essay on Self Knowledge. The module will best structured round the chapters of The Exchange of Words, with supplementary readings proposed as we proceed.
