Pilgrimage, journeys that allow people to experience connection with sacred events and individuals, have been a major motivation across cultures. Spanning world faiths this module will examine the central role of the visual environment in pilgrimage experience. The module introduces students to a range of artefacts from cathedrals and mosques to reliquaries and pilgrim tokens, brought together to explore the ways in which art influenced the nature and understanding of pilgrimage, and vice versa. . By taking examples from the major world faiths it will enable a greater understanding of the particular art and architecture that evolved to meet the spiritual and physical needs of pilgrims.
