We explore how to get the most cost-effective performance from mechanical (and some mechatronic) design by studying a variety of new concepts, analytical and reasoning tools for working with incomplete specifications and practical 'fixes'.  We draw heavily upon examples from fields such as instrumentation and machine tools, but the underlying ideas are applicable to seeking best practice in almost all design situations.
